When Your Friend Treats You Like an Option, Not a Priority
Friendships should feel effortless.
They should be filled with laughter, late-night conversations, and a mutual
understanding that you matter. But sometimes, friendships throw you into
situations that force you to question your place in someone’s life.
That’s exactly what happened to me.
It was my friend’s birthday, and I got
a last-minute invite—a rushed phone call at 2:45 PM, with the party happening
just hours later. She told me it was a surprise planned by her mom, and I
didn’t think much of it. But something felt... off. It wasn’t in the way the
decorations were arranged or the way the music played—it was in the
interactions, the conversations, the details that started unraveling. And as
conversations unfolded that night, the truth slipped out—there was no surprise.
I wasn’t originally part of the plan. I was just invited last.
That realization stung.
The party was never a surprise. She
had simply invited me at the last minute. I wasn’t part of the plan. I was an
afterthought.
The Weight of Being an Afterthought
It makes you wonder—did they even want
me there, or was I just a convenient addition to round out the guest list? It’s
a moment of forced reflection, where you start reconsidering all the times you
were always there for them, yet they couldn’t prioritize you when it
mattered.
Being treated as an afterthought
doesn’t just hurt—it teaches you a lesson about value, respect, and what
real friendships should feel like.
Processing the Hurt
In moments like these, it’s easy to
spiral—overthinking every interaction, searching for hidden signs that this
friendship was always one-sided. But here’s the thing: your feelings are
valid. You deserve friends who make you feel like a priority, not a backup
plan.
So what can you do?
- Acknowledge your worth. Your presence in someone’s life should
never feel like an obligation or an accidental invite. If a friendship
makes you feel like an extra rather than a main character, it's worth
re-evaluating.
- Communicate (if it feels right). If this friendship is important to you,
consider addressing the situation. Let them know how their actions made
you feel. Sometimes, people don’t realize their mistakes until they’re
called out on them.
- Decide if you want to stay or walk away. Not all friendships are meant to last
forever. Some friendships teach us lessons, help us grow, and eventually
fade. That’s okay. Prioritize the connections that make you feel valued.
Moving
Forward
After this
experience, I asked myself: Do I invite this friend to my own birthday
party? Do I keep this friendship alive? Do I let this moment define how I feel
about them forever?
The truth is,
I don’t have an exact answer yet. But what I do know is this—friendships should
never leave you feeling unimportant. They should
feel warm, inviting, and effortless. And if a friendship consistently makes you
question your worth, then maybe the problem isn’t you. Maybe the
problem is them. Some friendships are meant to be temporary.
Not every bond withstands the test of time, and that’s okay. In my previous blog
What
I Wish I Knew: Lessons for My Fellow Teens, I talked
about this—how friendships can shift, fade, or simply run their course. You can
check that out here. Letting go
doesn’t mean losing; it means growing. π±
It’s
important to recognize when a friendship no longer serves you. Holding onto
something out of habit or nostalgia can weigh you down. Prioritizing yourself
isn’t selfish—it’s essential. You deserve connections that make you feel
cherished, valued, and uplifted.π«
So, let go
when you need to. Release the friendships that no longer bring joy. Choose
yourself. Because the best relationships aren’t the ones you force to
stay—they’re the ones that naturally make you feel at home. π€π©·
